I have been a Headteacher at Little Ilford School for 7.5 years -
my first Headship. In that time I have lead the school from
satisfactory to outstanding June 2009.
The school and its community have many challenges:
• 1350 students on roll
• 97% ethnic minority students
• 90% have English as an additional language
• 35% student with educational needs which is higher than
national average
• High levels of social deprivation (53% Free School Meals)
• High % of over crowded housing: highest in Newham
• High level of inactive adults; unemployed
• Gang and violence in the community
We are a culturally rich and diverse school with a wonderful culture of praise, support and caring for each other. We all have very high aspirations of the students whatever their personal of social challenges.
These reflect my values and philosophy about students and education. I have worked in Newham and prior to that Haringey, and the best reward for me is to see the unexpected….challenging and difficult students excel and succeed!
This year I finished working at Royal Docks as well so I could support them in coming out of Special Measures. This is indicative of how all schools should use their strengths to support other schools areas for development and I am proud of my staff for always helping and sharing their good work with others.
I intend to ensure that our students achieve even higher rates of progress and outcomes through high quality learning and teaching and a curriculum that provides opportunities for ALL students to achieve as many A*- C grades as possible. The ideal is 100% A*- C!
So, we are committed and determined in our approach, whilst providing our students with real care and support.
Come and visit us and meet our wonderful students and staff!
Yours sincerely,
Yvonne Powell
